Shane Smith 2016-17

Shane Smith

Shane Smith is serving as the University of Regina’s interim women’s volleyball head coach for the 2016-17 season. He comes to the U of R following a season in which he served as an assistant coach for both the men’s team and the women’s team at Brandon University.

Smith also has experience at both the provincial and national levels, including being on the coaching staff for the senior women’s national team during the 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16 seasons. He was also a two-time assistant coach for Manitoba’s 17U team at the National Team Challenge Cup.

Besides his stint with Brandon last year, Smith also spent the 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15 campaigns as an assistant coach with the University of Winnipeg’s men’s team.

Smith received his Master of Education in coaching studies from the University of Victoria in 2012 as well as both Bachelor of Physical Education and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Manitoba in 2006. He has extensive experience as a teacher within the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, teaching physical education at Golden Gate Middle School before moving on to John Taylor Collegiate starting in 2008.

His most recent head coaching experience includes this past season with the Cats Club 18U, as he guided the Brandon-based club to a bronze medal at the Volleyball Manitoba Provincial Championships in April. He spent the two years before that as both the head coach of John Taylor’s varsity girls’ team and as the 17U coach for the Pipers Volleyball Club in Winnipeg.

Smith will serve as the program’s interim head coach until late April.
