Bisons take four-set victory over Cougars in home opener

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team was defeated by a score of 3-1 by the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The hotly contested first set, eventually won 25-23 by Manitoba, featured 10 tie scores and five lead changes. Manitoba won the second set by a 25-20 count, but the Cougars recovered to defeat the Bisons 25-21 in the third set. The Bisons scored 11 consecutive points early in the fourth set and cruised to a 25-13 victory to clinch the match.

Samantha Loewen, last year's CIS Rookie of the Year, fell just three kills short of a triple-double for the Bisons, ending up with 39 assists, 12 digs, and seven kills. Sarah Morrissette led all players with 14 kills for the Bisons, while Kate Wasyliw had six kills and a game-high 21 digs.

Second-year setter Tiffany Herman had 32 assists and a team-leading 12 digs to record the team's lone double-double. Meagan Smith had a team-high .233 hitting percentage, registering 10 kills on 30 attacks.

The Bisons, who had a .263 hitting percentage over the match, recorded 74 digs to Regina's 57.

Friday's match was the first of the Canada West season for both teams. The Cougars and the Bisons will square off again on Saturday night, with match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
