Beth Clark had 16 kills to lead the University of Regina's women's volleyball team to a straight-sets (27-25, 25-20, 25-20) victory over the No. 3-ranked Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Clark had 16 kills and just one error on 29 total attacks, giving her a .517 hitting percentage for the match.
Tiffany Herman dished out 36 assists for the Cougars, while
Meagan Onstad tallied 11 digs and a career-high 11 kills to record the first double-double of her CIS career.
Led by
Tammy Jule and
Kelly Cowan with 12 each, the Cougars recorded 48 digs to the Spartans' 36.
Danielle Foth led the Spartans with 10 kills, while Andrea Ball and Carmen Dyck each had nine digs for Trinity.
The Cougars led by as many as six points in the early stages of the first quarter, but the Spartans came back to tie the game at 24, then took a 25-24 lead. Regina was able to mount a comeback of its own, though, as the Cougars scored three consecutive points to take the set by a 27-25 count.
Lisa Abrahamowicz scored the final point of the set on an ace.
The Cougars didn't trail in either the second or third sets, and won both by scored of 25-20 to clinch the match.
The win improves the Cougars' record to 1-2 on the season, while Trinity Western falls to 0-1.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday night. Match time is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the CKHS.
