Michelle Anderson registered her third shutout of the season as the University of Regina's women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.
The draw eliminates Fraser Valley (3-7-3) from postseason contention, as the Cascades needed to post two victories this weekend to have any chance of qualifying for the final playoff spot in the conference. Regina's record moves to 0-9-4 on the season.
The match was largely dictated by a fierce northwesterly wind which, at times, gusted to an estimated 90 km/h. Play had to be stopped briefly during the first half as the Cascades' net was blown away from its position.
Both teams had a few good chances to score during the match, but neither team was able to finish. Fraser Valley directed 10 shots at the net, while the Cougars had six shots. The Cascades had eight corner kicks, but Regina was able to successfully deal with each of them.
Anderson made four saves to secure the shutout, and now has a goals-against average of 1.24 and a save percentage of .859 for the season. She ranks among Canada West's leaders in both categories.
Chantelle Biagioni made two saves to record her second shutout of the season for the Cascades.
Chelsie Dorosh and
Dana Renneberg both had shots on net for Regina, while Megan Webster and Marie Verbenkov had two each for Fraser Valley.
The Cougars will finish off their season on Sunday afternoon with a match against the No. 10-ranked Trinity Western Spartans (8-2-3). Match time is scheduled for 12 noon.
NOTES: The Cougars' four draws is the most that the team has had since its inception in 2001 … Anderson's three shutouts is the third most in the conference this year and the most by a U of R keeper in a single season.
