Vikes defeat Cougars at U of R Field

10/4/2008 5:38:13 PM

Box Score The University of Regina's women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to the No. 7-ranked Victoria Vikes on Saturday afternoon in a Canada West match at the U of R Field.

The match was played in extremely blustery conditions, with a southeast wind gusting to over 70 km/h. The extreme gusts actually moved the nets on the field at one point, causing a wind delay during the second half.

Going into the wind didn't bother Victoria in the first half, as the Vikes were able to sneak behind the Cougars' central defence for a few good opportunities early. Victoria scored in the 29th minute when Meaghan Schaefer chipped a cross into the six-yard box and Moira Hood knocked it home for her fourth goal of the season.

Jackie Snell's first goal of the season gave Victoria a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute. Snell's goal proved to be the final strike of the match.

Stephanie Parker made four saves for Victoria to record the shutout and the victory. Michelle Anderson, who had missed the previous five matches due to a hamstring injury, had four saves for the Cougars but was tagged with the loss.

The Vikes outshot Regina by a 13-5 margin during the match.

Victoria will travel to Winnipeg today for a Sunday match against the Manitoba Bisons. The Cougars will host the No. 10-ranked British Columbia Thunderbirds on Sunday at 12 noon.
