The Victoria Vikes took an early lead over the University of Regina's men's basketball team on Friday night and withstood a late Cougar charge to come up with a 81-75 road victory in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Sparked by Cyril Indome's 11-point outburst in the latter stages of the first quarter, the Vikes took a 28-18 lead after the first frame. The Cougars chipped away at the lead in the second quarter and trailed by just five at the break.

The Cougars trailed by around ten points for the majority of the second half, then made a late run to make things interesting. A putback dunk by Kris Heshka capped a 12-4 run that pulled the Cougars to within two points with just over two minutes left in the game, but Victoria promptly scored the next six points to effectively put the game away.

Mitch Gudgeon led the Vikes with 16 points and five assists, as the fifth-year forward led all players with 37 minutes on the floor. Indome and Brandon Dunlop both had 13 points for Victoria, while Tyler Hass had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Victoria launched 27 three-pointers during the game and were successful on nine of them, led by three from Indome.

Jeff Lukomski piled up 25 points for the Cougars and was 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. Heshka had a strong fourth quarter and finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamal Williams also posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Victoria improves to 5-2 with the win. Despite the loss, the Cougars (2-3) remain tied with Brandon for first place in the Great Plains Division, as the Bobcats were defeated by the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night.

The Vikes will travel to Brandon for a Saturday night game against the Bobcats. The Cougars will entertain the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds at the CKHS on Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

NOTES: Lukomski pulled into sole possession of second place on the U of R's all-time list in three-pointers with 135 … Joel Hunter is the school's all-time leader with 195.
