An 11-2 run over a two-minute span late in the fourth quarter turned a five-point deficit into a four-point Cougar lead, and the University of Regina's men's basketball team was able to hang on for an 86-84 win over the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday night in Brandon.
The two-point win extends a remarkable string of tight games involving the Cougars. Each of the U of R's last five games have been decided by three points or less, and the Cougars have come out on top in four of those contests.
For the second consecutive night, Regina coach
James Hillis relied on his team's inside game to provide the majority of the Cougars' points.
Kris Heshka had a game-high 28 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals to put up his third double-double of the season, while
Jamal Williams added 23 points.
Jeff Lukomski chipped in with 15 points, with
Paul Schubach adding 12.
Rejean Chabot and Dany Charlery both had 26 points to lead Brandon. Charlery added a team-high nine rebounds for the Bobcats.
The win gives the Cougars (6-4) a two-game lead over Brandon (4-6) for the Great Plains Division lead.
The Cougars will now have over a month off before returning to the Canada West schedule on Jan. 2 and 3 against Trinity Western (6-5) and Simon Fraser (6-5).
