The University of Regina's women's basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season after defeating the No. 6-ranked Calgary Dinos by a score of 72-61 on Saturday night at the U of C's Jack Simpson Gym.
The Cougars outscored the Dinos by a 19-9 margin in the second quarter to take a 13-point lead into halftime. Calgary chipped away at the lead and brought the score to within five points in the final two minutes of the game, but the Cougars' defence held strong and
Stacey Walker hit all six of her free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Walker was 3-for-5 from behind the arc and led the Cougars with 15 points and four assists.
Chelsea Cassano had 13 points and 10 rebounds to record the game's lone double-double, while
Jessica Lynch also helped out with 13 points.
Gabrielle Gheyssen came off the bench to score 12 points and pull down eight rebounds in 19 minutes on the floor.
Courtney Coyle led the Dinos with 15 points, but was just 5-for-18 from the field. The Dinos hit just 16 of their 59 field goals (27.1%) for the game.
The Cougars will return home next weekend for games against Victoria (2-4) and British Columbia (2-4) on Friday and Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 6:15 p.m.
