The University of Regina's women's volleyball team defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan in straight sets on Saturday night by a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-20) to improve to 6-7 on the year. The loss drops SFU to 3-10 on the season.
In the first set, Regina led 8-7 at the first break following an attack error by Sarah McNeil and led 16-14 at the second after a kill by
Lisa Abrahamowicz. Following the break, Regina created space between themselves and the Clan, leading 23-18, and closed out the set on a kill from
Solveig Nilson.
In the second set, Regina led 8-7 at the first break, however the Clan battled back, taking the next four points and led 16-13 at the second break. The Cougars were able to regain the lead at 18-17 following a kill from
Beth Clark, and closed out the set again on a kill from Nilson.
In the final game, SFU led 8-7 at the first break and extended their lead to 13-8 following an ace by McNeil, however the Cougars once again rallied and went ahead 16-14 after a kill by Abrahamowicz. With the set 20-18 in Regina's favour, the Cougars won five of the next seven points, closing out the set 25-20 on a kill from Abrahamowicz.
Clark led the Cougars with 15 kills, while
Tiffany Herman had a game-high 33 assists.
Kelly Cowan was the match leader in digs with 19.
For the Clan, Krystyna Adams had a team-high ten kills, while Stephanie Senges added 32 assists. Laura Mireault registered a team-high 16 digs in the loss.
The two teams rematch on Sunday at 1 p.m.
