Cougars complete weekend sweep with four-set win over Simon Fraser

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep over the Simon Fraser University Clan with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-21) victory on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Cougars to 7-7 on the season, while the Clan fall to 3-11 on the year.

The Clan led at the first break in play 8-7 following a kill by Jennifer Northrup and 16-15 after a kill by Colleen Douville. With the game tied at 20-20, freshman Krisjana Fridfinnson took over for the Clan, accounting for three of SFU's final five points, including the set clincher to give Simon Fraser the first set 25-23.

SFU kept their momentum at the start of the second game, and ran out to an 8-4 lead following a block by Stephanie Senges and Sarah McNeil. From there however it was all Regina, as the Cougars scored 12 of the next 14 points to lead 16-10 at the second break, and closed the set on a kill by Meagan Smith.

Regina led 8-6 at the first break of the third set, and opened their lead to 16-10 at the second following an attack error by Lauren Campbell. The Clan were never in the set and the Cougars closed it out on an attack error by Northrup.

In the fourth, after falling behind 4-1, SFU rallied to lead 8-6 at the first break in play, however the Cougars battled back to lead 16-15 at the second break following a kill from Solveig Nilson. Regina controlled the final points, and closed out the fourth 25-21 to win the match.

Beth Clark led Regina with 14 kills, while Tiffany Herman had 36 assists. Kelly Cowan led the Cougars with 16 digs. For the Clan, Colleen Douville had a team-high 13 kills, while Senges added 33 set assists. Laura Mireault led Simon Fraser with 11 digs.

Next weekend the Clan play at the University of Manitoba, while the Cougars host the University of Saskatchewan.
