Box Score Game Summary
The Manitoba Bisons scored three goals in the span of six minutes in the second period to break a 1-1 tie, and they cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the Max Bell Arena in Winnipeg.
Manitoba's Stewart Thiessen opened up the scoring just under four minutes into the game. Thiessen's goal would stand up as the only marker of the first period.
Caine Pearpoint tied up the game just 55 seconds into the second, an unassisted effort for his fourth goal of the season.
The Bisons waited until just before the midway mark of the second period before opening the floodgates. Mike Hellyer, Mark Olafson, and Nick Hotson scored to give Manitoba a three-goal lead at the second intermission, then Chris Benias and Hotson scored in the third to extend the lead to 6-1.
Kyle Ross notched his seventh goal of the season on the power play with just over eight minutes left in the third, but that would be as close as the Cougars would come.
Steve Christie made 20 saves in the win for the Bisons, while
Brant Hilton stopped 24 of 30 shots sent his way for the Cougars.
The loss drops Regina's record to 6-12-2 on the season. With 14 points, the Cougars remain fifth in the conference – one point ahead of Calgary and two points ahead of UBC, though both of those teams have two games in hand on the U of R.
The Cougars will return home for a rare Saturday/Sunday series against the Calgary Dinos next weekend.
