The University of Regina's women's volleyball team improved to 8-7 on the season after defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies in straight sets on Friday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The No. 9-ranked Cougars trailed 8-4 in the first set at the first media timeout, but immediately turned things around. The U of R went on an 11-4 run and led 16-12 at the second timeout, but the Huskies came roaring back with an 8-2 run following the break. The Cougars trailed 20-18 after the run, but won seven of the last ten points to take a 25-23 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was just as close as the first, but the Cougars pulled away after a 17-17 tie. The U of R scored eight of the last ten points to take the second set by a 25-19 margin. The third set was similar to the first two, with the two teams close until the middle of the set, when the Cougars closed out on a big run and clinched the match with a 25-16 win.
Second-year setter
Tiffany Herman had another big match for the Cougars, coming up with 37 assists and seven digs.
Tammy Jule had a match-high 14 kills and added six digs, while
Kelly Cowan led all players with 14 digs.
Meagan Smith (pictured, left) also had a strong performance, collecting seven kills, five digs, and two service aces.
Ashley Schurko had a team-high eight kills and added seven digs for the Huskies. Sarah Nelubowich had 19 assists and nine digs for Saskatchewan, while Shannon Usher had seven kills and equalled Nebulowich with nine digs.
The Cougars are now three matches ahead of Thompson Rivers (5-10) for the final playoff position, as the WolfPack were defeated 3-1 by Trinity Western on Friday night.
Saskatchewan drops to 2-13 on the season.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday night at the CKHS. Match time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
