1/30/2009 9:38:19 PM

Box Score The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won the first two sets over No. 3-ranked Alberta on Friday night, but dropped the next three and lost by a 3-2 score to the Pandas in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars took 25-23 and 25-19 wins in the first two sets before the Pandas came storming back. Alberta replied with 25-19 and 25-23 wins in the third and fourth to force a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set, Alberta jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Cougars scored four of their own to pull to within one. It was all Pandas from there, though, as Alberta scored ten of the next 15 points to clinch the match with a 15-9 win.

Daryll Roper (54 assists, 14 digs) and Kelci French (11 kills, 11 digs) both recorded double-doubles for the Pandas. Alexa Berton and Samantha Wojtkiw were both huge at the net for Alberta, with Berton registering three solo blocks and four assisted blocks and Wojtkiw grabbing two solos and six assisted. Allison Ritter led all players with 16 digs.

Tammy Jule led the Cougars with a match-high 20 kills on 54 attacks, while Tiffany Herman dished out 38 assists and added 12 digs for a double-double. Beth Clark had six assisted blocks, with Solveig Nilson and Meagan Smith both chipping in five. Kelly Cowan had a team-high 15 digs for Regina.

The win improves Alberta's record to 15-4. The Pandas will clinch first place in the conference if they complete the sweep with a win on Saturday night over the Cougars.

The Cougars drop to 9-8 with the loss. The loss snapped their five-match winning streak, which was the team's longest since they won six in a row in November of 2004.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night, with match time scheduled for 8 p.m. at the CKHS.

NOTES: Despite the loss, the Cougars still clinched a postseason berth, as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack were defeated in five sets by the Calgary Dinos.
