Women's Preview
The Cougars extended their winning streak to five matches last weekend after recording straight-sets victories over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday and Saturday. Regina, which remains ranked No. 9 in the CIS, is now 9-7 on the season and will host the No. 3-ranked Alberta Pandas this weekend at the CKHS.
This weekend will mark the final two matches of the conference schedule for Alberta, which can clinch its first Canada West regular season title since 2004 with wins over the Cougars on both Friday and Saturday.
The Cougars need just one win – or one Thompson Rivers loss – to clinch the seventh and final Canada West postseason berth. Regina also has an outside chance to move up in the conference standings from their current position in seventh place, but the Cougars would likely have to win all four of their remaining matches to do so.
Kelly Cowan and
Tammy Jule, Regina's two fifth-year players, will be honoured prior to Saturday's match. Live statistics will be available on the Cougars' website for both matches.
Men's Preview
After recording two consecutive weekend splits, the Cougars (2-14) will host the No. 1-ranked Alberta Golden Bears this weekend at the CKHS.
Sparked by a wild comeback late in the second set to avoid going down 2-0 in the match, the Cougars took a 3-1 victory over Saskatchewan on Friday night.
Blake Wheler was the offensive catalyst for the Cougars, as his .833 hitting percentage was the highest by any Canada West player in a single game since 2006.
The Golden Bears enter the weekend with the regular season conference title already clinched, marking the 11th straight year that Alberta has recorded at least a tie for the best win/loss record in Canada West. Dating back to the 2007-08 season, Alberta (16-0) has won 26 consecutive conference and playoff matches.
Wheler,
Ryan DeCosse, and
Chris Knoop will all be playing their final matches in U of R uniforms this weekend. Live statistics will be available on the Cougars' website for both matches.
