Box Score Game Summary

One day after taking out No. 1-ranked Alberta in a shootout, the University of Regina's men's hockey team was defeated by a score of 7-2 by the Golden Bears on Saturday night in a Canada West game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Alberta's Eric Hunter scored the lone goal of the first period, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. Jesse Gimblett extended that lead to two just before the eight-minute mark of the second period, but Regina's Dillon Johnstone replied for the Cougars on the power play midway through the middle stanza.

The Golden Bears, however, weren't about to allow themselves to be swept by the Cougars for the first time since 1991. Chad Klassen's shorthanded goal, scored just 28 seconds after Johnstone cut the lead to 2-1, would eventually prove to be the game winner.

The score stayed 3-1 in favour of Alberta until the third period, when the Golden Bears opened the floodgates. Derek Ryan, Kyle Fecho, and Brian Woolger all scored for Alberta in the first half of the third period, extending the visitors' lead to five. Cody Thoring scored for the Cougars late in the period, but Klassen finished the scoring with Alberta's seventh goal of the game with 95 seconds remaining.

Klassen ended up with two goals and two assists for Alberta, while Aaron Sorochan stopped 18 shots to secure the win for the Golden Bears.

Adam Ward was tagged for seven goals on 24 shots in the loss for Regina.

Alberta was 1-for-9 on the power play, while the Cougars were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

The win improves Alberta's record to 18-2-2. Regina falls to 9-13-2 with the loss.

Next weekend, Alberta will host Lethbridge on Friday and Saturday, while the Cougars will enjoy some time off before returning to action on Feb. 13 and 14 against UBC.
