The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-14, 25-14) defeat to the No. 3-ranked Alberta Pandas on Saturday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
With the victory, Alberta clinches the Canada West regular season title with a 16-4 record and will host the Canada West final four on Feb. 20 and 21 in Edmonton.
The Pandas were led by Jocelyn Blair, who tallied 17 kills on 34 attacks and added 11 digs for one of her team's three double-doubles. Blair had just three attack errors, giving her a hitting percentage of .412 for the match. Daryll Roper also had a double-double for Alberta with 49 assists and ten digs, and also had five block assists. Alexa Berton was a force at the net for the Pandas, recording ten total blocks to go along with ten kills.
For the Cougars,
Tammy Jule (15 kills, ten digs) and
Tiffany Herman (28 assists, ten digs) each secured double-doubles.
Kelly Cowan tied Blair for the match lead with 11 digs, while
Roxanne Olynyk also had ten digs for Regina.
The match was the final home action for both Cowan and Jule. Cowan has played libero for five years at the U of R, while Jule spent four years as a Cougar after spending her first year of eligibility at the University at Buffalo.
The Cougars will finish in seventh place in Canada West, and will almost certainly travel to Calgary for the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive season. If Calgary (14-4) falters at home against 3-14 Simon Fraser next weekend, the Cougars could also travel to UBC or Trinity Western in the best-of-three conference quarterfinals.
The No. 9-ranked Cougars will finish off their season next weekend with a pair of meaningless away matches at Thompson Rivers (5-13).
