Box Score Game Summary
The University of Regina's men's hockey team opened up its Canada West schedule with a 9-2 loss to the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night in Edmonton.
Justin Scott scored the first goal of the game for the Cougars on the power play just under four minutes into the opening period, but Alberta's Chad Klassen tied it up less than two minutes later. Tyler Metcalfe's unassisted goal gave Alberta the lead with six minutes remaining in the first, and Klassen's second power play goal of the game gave the Golden Bears a 3-1 cushion early in the second.
The Cougars (0-1-0) had an immediate response, as
Blair Stengler cut the lead to one just 20 seconds after Klassen scored, but that would be as close as the Cougars would come. Alberta reeled off six unanswered goals in the second and third periods, led by a pair from assistant captain Derek Ryan.
Real Cyr stopped 24 shots in the win for Alberta (1-0-0), while Regina's
Brant Hilton made 24 saves and was pulled after the Golden Bears' seventh goal. Rookie
Shayne Barrie came on in relief of Hilton and stopped 12 of 14 Alberta shots in 25 minutes of work.
The two teams will square off again in Edmonton on Saturday night. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.
