The University of Regina's women's soccer team will finish off its 2009 season with four home matches beginning this weekend with a pair of games against the Manitoba Bisons. Kickoff is scheduled for high noon on Saturday and Sunday at the U of R Field.
The Cougars were eliminated from contention for a playoff berth after their losses last weekend at Saskatchewan and Alberta, but will be attempting to play the role of spoiler this Saturday and Sunday against a Manitoba team that enters Saturday tied with UBC for the fourth and final Canada West postseason spot.
Regina (1-9-0) has been led offensively by
Meagan Cormier. The first-year forward fired five goals in her first three games and, despite not scoring since, is still tied for seventh in the conference in goals. In net will be
Michelle Anderson, who holds a 3.37 goals-against average and a .724 save percentage. Besides Anderson, defender
Catherine Lukan and midfielder
Tegan Koroluk are the only Cougars to start all ten games this season.
After winning five of its first six matches, Manitoba (5-4-1) is winless in its last four after tying UBC and losing to Trinity Western, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Fifth-year forward Desiree Scott is tied for the Canada West lead with seven assists, while fellow fifth-year forward Caley Miskimmin has scored a team-leading six goals. Ashley Forbes has seen the majority of action between the pipes for Manitoba, as the fourth-year keeper has a 1.10 goals-against average and an .820 save percentage.
The two teams met once during the non-conference schedule, with the Bisons taking a 1-0 victory over Regina at the Cougar Summer Classic on Aug. 29.
The Cougars will close out their season next weekend with home matches against Calgary and Lethbridge.
