Jessica Meyer's first career goal gave the University of Regina's women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.
In the 75th minute, Meyer dribbled around a defender to create space just outside the 18-yard box. Manitoba goalkeeper Hayleigh Bell came out to challenge Meyer, but the first-year midfielder chipped the ball over Bell to find the back of the net.
Regina was able to defend its lead for the remainder of the contest, giving the Cougars their second win of the season and their first win over Manitoba since the Bisons joined Canada West in 2005.
“We were full value for the win today,” Regina head coach
Bob Maltman said. “We played with grit and determination, and now we know what it's like to win a one-nil game instead of being on the other side of the score.”
After strong performances in training, Maltman rewarded
Linsay Barbier with her first start of the season and the second-year goalkeeper responded with a four-save shutout. Barbier's best save came in the 82nd minute, when she made a diving save to stop Manitoba midfielder Desiree Scott's shot from 25 yards out.
Bell was credited with one save, as the Bisons outshot the Cougars by a 12-8 margin.
The win improves Regina's record to 2-10-0 on the season, while Manitoba falls to 6-5-1.
The Cougars will finish off their 2009 season with home games against Lethbridge and Calgary next weekend.
