Box Score Game Summary
Despite outshooting Alberta by a 34-23 margin, the University of Regina's men's hockey team suffered a 5-3 loss to the Golden Bears on Saturday night in a Canada West game at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
Alberta's Jesse Gimblett scored the lone goal of the first period, and Chad Klassen's third goal of the weekend extended the Golden Bears' lead to two early in the second.
Craig Cuthbert's first Canada West goal cut the lead to 2-1, but Alberta replied with goals from Ian Barteaux and Jean-Pierre Szaszkiewicz in the span of 60 seconds in the latter stages of the second.
Dan Bohemier and
Caine Pearpoint both scored for Regina to draw the Cougars to within one, but they were unable to tie up the game despite peppering Alberta goalie Travis Yonkman with 16 shots in the third. Alberta's Greg Gardner scored an empty net goal with 14 seconds left to ice the game.
Yonkman made 31 saves for Alberta to secure the win, while
Brant Hilton made 18 saves for the Cougars.
The Cougars (0-2-0) will now prepare for their home openers against UBC. Games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
