After taking a 1-0 lead into the half, the UBC Thunderbirds got two goals from Caitlin Davie in the first nine minutes of the second half and added two more in a 5-0 victory over the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon in a Canada West women's soccer game at the U of R Field.
UBC scored the only goal of the first half in the 37th minute, when Natalie Hirayama feathered a nice through ball to Rachael Sawer, who connected on her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Davie, who had started all five of UBC's games heading into Sunday, sat out the first half and made an immediate impact when she was subbed in at the break by head coach Dick Mosher. Davie's header off of a Sara Treloar corner kick in the 49th minute extended UBC's lead to two goals, and Davie scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute to put the Thunderbirds up 3-0.
Carmen Lindsay (79') and Kelly Isberg (89') added late insurance goals for the Thunderbirds, who improve to 2-2-2 on the season. UBC's Jaclyn Dunnett made seven saves to secure her first shutout of the season.
Regina keeper
Michelle Anderson made 10 saves for the Cougars, who had their best opportunity to score in the seventh minute when
Tiffany Gyurek took a through ball and fired a shot just to the left of the UBC net. The loss drops Regina's conference record to 1-7-0.
The Thunderbirds will be one of just four Canada West teams in action next weekend, as they'll host Fraser Valley on Saturday and No. 3-ranked Victoria on Sunday. The Cougars will have almost two weeks off before returning to action with road matches at Saskatchewan and Alberta on Oct. 17 and 18.
