Cougars lead from start to finish in 66-37 win over Trinity Western

The University of Regina's women's basketball team led from start to finish in a 66-37 win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The No. 4-ranked Cougars held Trinity Western to nine points in both the first and the second quarters and took a 30-18 lead into halftime. Regina never led by less than 12 points in the second half and limited the Spartans to just seven points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Brittany Read led Regina with her third double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 18 points and ten rebounds for the Cougars. Joanna Zalesiak had ten points and five rebounds for the Cougars, while fifth-year forward Carmen Stewart had nine steals.

Emily Knauff had a team-high 13 points for Trinity Western and led all players with 33 minutes played.

The win improves Regina's record to 3-1 on the season, while Trinity Western falls to 1-3.

The Cougars will play Alberta (5-1) next weekend in Edmonton, while the Spartans will host Victoria (1-2).

NOTES: The last time the Cougars allowed less than 37 points in a game was back on Nov. 24, 2006 when they defeated Brandon by a score of 72-24 ... Stewart's nine steals were the most by a Cougar since the U of R joined Canada West in 2001-02, breaking the old mark of eight set by Jana Schweitzer back on Nov. 15, 2002.
