Box Score Another chapter in the storied men's basketball rivalry between the Regina Cougars and Brandon Bobcats was closed on Sunday after the Bobcats came up with a 78-76 win in Game 3 of the Great Plains Division final series.
The Cougars led by as many as 19 points, but Brandon battled back and took its first lead of the ball game with 57 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Cougars had a pair of chances to tie the game on their final possession, but were unable to come up with a bucket and Brandon's Dany Charlery was able to swat the rebound down the floor as time expired to secure the victory for the Bobcats.
The win gives the Bobcats the last-ever Great Plains Division championship, as the Great Plains and Central divisions will merge to form a new eight-team East Division next season. Brandon will move on to the Canada West Final Four, which begins on Friday at UBC.
Charlery led Brandon with 23 points, eight assists, and five steals, while Eric Holm came off the bench to score 18 for the Bobcats.
Jeff Lukomski ended up with a team-leading 23 points for the Cougars, 20 of which came in the first half.
Paul Schubach played all 40 minutes and had 16 points, while
Kris Heshka had 15 points and seven rebounds.
The loss ends the Cougars' season, but will return virtually all of the team's roster next season. Head coach
James Hillis is expected to have the services of everyone but fourth-year centre
Steven Christie, who will graduate with a Bachelor of Science with a major in geology later this spring.
