A three-pointer by Jeff Lukomski at the final buzzer clanged off the rim, allowing the University of Victoria's men's basketball team to escape with a 77-75 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at McKinnon Gym in Victoria.

Trailing by two with just 0.8 seconds left on the clock, Jamal Williams inbounded a long pass to Lukomski, who got the shot off in time but couldn't get it to fall.

Wendell Thomas led Victoria with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Ryan MacKinnon chipped in with 11 points.

Williams had a big night for the Cougars, scoring a season-high 24 points and adding five rebounds and three assists. Paul Schubach had 17 points for Regina, while Kris Heshka chipped in with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Victoria improves to 6-3 with the win, while the Cougars fall to 5-7.

The Cougars will hit the road again next weekend for a pair of critical Prairie Division games at Manitoba (4-7).

NOTES: Williams' 24 points was the most the fifth-year forward has scored in a single game since pouring in 25 at Brandon on Nov. 28, 2008 … Williams, now with 1066 career points, moved ahead of Bill Johnson for ninth place on the U of R's all-time scoring list … Schubach needs 30 points to hit 1000 for his career.
