10/29/2010 11:15:28 PM

Box Score Fifth-year post Kris Heshka scored 23 points and added 11 rebounds to lead the University of Regina's men's basketball team to a 103-77 win over the Brandon Bobcats in a Canada West game on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars (1-0) opened up a 14-point lead at halftime, then pulled away from Brandon with 12 consecutive points over a three-minute span of the third quarter and never looked back.

“I thought we played well overall and got a great game from Kris (Heshka), but the biggest positive was that we defended well,” Cougars head coach James Hillis said. “I think Brandon is going to be right there in the mix for a playoff spot this season and we need to come out strong and get another one tomorrow night.”

Heshka was 7-for-12 from the field and hit nine of his 15 free throws. Seven of his 11 rebounds came on the offensive glass. Marek Downarowicz also had a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.

First-year post Matt Campbell had 12 points and seven rebounds in his U of R debut, while Paul Gareau scored 10 points in what was his first game in over two years.

Isaiah James, Donovan Gayle, and O'Brian Wallace all had 10 points for Brandon (2-1), while Kyrie Coleman scored seven and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game.

NOTES: The win marked Regina's third consecutive victory over Brandon … Friday marked the first time in Cougar history that both the men's and women's teams broke the 100-point barrier on the same night … third-year guard Sterling Nostedt and first-year guard Brendan Hebert both made their first career starts for the Cougars.
