The Trinity Western Spartans recorded a thrilling five-set (25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 19-25, 15-10) win over the University of Regina in a Canada West women's volleyball match on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The two teams traded wins in the first four sets, with the No. 4-ranked Spartans taking the first and third sets and the Cougars replying with victories in the second and the fourth.
Regina's win in the fourth set up a fifth and deciding set in which the Cougars held a 7-4 lead before Trinity Western mounted a comeback. The Spartans went on a 5-1 run to take the lead, then clinched the match with four consecutive points to claim a 15-10 win in the set.
Kara Jansen Van Doorn led the Spartans in kills for the sixth time in as many matches, recording 22 kills and just four errors for a team-high .295 hitting percentage. Van Doorn added 12 digs to record one of Trinity Western's three double-doubles and had seven total blocks as well.
Alicia Perrin had 11 kills and 11 blocks for Trinity Western, while Chelsea Hudson had 48 assists, 13 digs, and seven blocks. Amy Lescheid chipped in with 10 kills and Andrea Ball had 19 digs in the victory as the Spartans (6-0) remain the only undefeated team in the conference.
Meagan Onstad had 18 kills and 17 digs for the Cougars, while
Kaitlyn Hughes (14 kills, 14 digs) and
Tiffany Herman (50 assists, 13 digs) also registered double-double for the Cougars.
Roxanne Olynyk (12) and
Michelle Sweeting (10) also hit double digits in kills.
Trinity Western returns to action next weekend with a pair of road matches at Alberta (1-3), while the Cougars continue their four-match homestand with matches on Friday and Saturday against Thompson Rivers (0-4).
NOTES: Perrin's 11 blocks are the most in a five-set match by a Canada West player this season.
