Cougars open season with four-set loss to No. 2 Manitoba

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team opened its 2010-11 Canada West schedule with a four set loss to the No. 2-ranked Manitoba Bisons on Friday night in Winnipeg.

The Bisons jumped out to a two-set lead with 25-23 and 25-10 victories in the first two sets before the Cougars replied with a 25-23 win in the third. Manitoba clinched the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.

Kristi Hunter led Manitoba with 15 kills and a match-leading five total blocks, while Ashley Voth had 11 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Sam Loewen had 46 assists for the Bisons, while Kate Wasyliw tied for the match lead with 12 digs.

Cougar third-year outside hitter Roxanne Olynyk led all players with 16 kills. After missing the entirety of the non-conference schedule with a finger injury, setter Tiffany Herman returned to action and tied Loewen with 46 assists. Meagan Onstad had 12 digs for the Cougars, who used both Rebecca Rink and Megan Semeniuk at libero.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the University of Manitoba campus.
