Box Score Game Summary

Ian McDonald's goal with just under five minutes remaining in the third period gave the University of Alberta's men's hockey team a 5-4 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

McDonald took a pass in the slot from Greg Gardner and fired a shot past Regina goalie Adam Ward, breaking a 4-4 tie late in the game. The Cougars pressed and pulled Ward for the extra attacker, but weren't able to push the contest into overtime.

Russ Nielsen opened the scoring for the Cougars in the first period, and Justin Scott extended Regina's lead to two with a shorthanded effort with four minutes left in the opening frame. Alberta was able to get one back before the first intermission, as Derek Ryan scored on the power play with just seven seconds remaining in the period.

No. 2-ranked Alberta poured it on in the second period, outscoring the Cougars by a 20-4 margin and getting goals from Sean Ringrose, Gardner, and Brian Woolger to go up 4-2 after two.

Scott scored again for the Cougars just before the eight-minute mark of the third period, and Ryan Bender's power play goal tied up the game at four five minutes later.

Alberta peppered Ward with 46 shots during the game. Travis Yonkman made 20 saves for the Golden Bears, who improve to 22-4-1 with the win.

The loss drops the Cougars' record to 9-15-1.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
