The University of Regina's men's hockey team plays their final home games of the 2009-10 campaign this weekend, as the Cougars will host Canada West-leading Alberta at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre on Friday and Saturday.
This weekend will also mark the team's final games at the Sherwood Twins, as the Cougars will move into their new digs at The Co-operators Arena in time for next season.
Regina started off the second half of the season as one of the hottest teams in the country, collecting 11 out of a possible 14 points in the seven games following the Christmas break. That streak put the Cougars back into contention for a playoff spot, but three consecutive losses – one to Manitoba and two last weekend to Lethbridge – means that the U of R will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 1999-00 season.
Fifth-year forward
Tanner Shultz, who leads the Cougars with 14 points, will be playing his final home games in a U of R uniform this weekend. Team captain
Caine Pearpoint and forward
Blair Stengler will also finish off their five-year Cougar careers against the Golden Bears.
Alberta comes into the weekend ranked No. 2 in the CIS, as the Golden Bears hold an impressive 21-4-1 Canada West record and a 13-point lead over Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
The Golden Bears boast the league's two leading scorers and five of the top seven. Chad Klassen leads the conference outright in goals (18) and points (43) and is tied with teammate Derek Ryan for the Canada West lead in assists (25). Ryan ranks second in the conference with 36 points, while Eric Hunter, Jesse Gimblett, Ian McDonald, and Sean Ringrose are all ranked in the conference's top ten in points.
Travis Yonkman and Real Cyr have split the goaltending duties for the Golden Bears, with both netminders starting 13 games so far.
The Cougars and the Golden Bears will meet at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday this weekend. Regina will close out its season next weekend with a pair of road games at Manitoba.
