Cougars take lead in quarterfinal series with 3-1 win over Brandon

Box Score The University of Regina's women's volleyball team defeated the Brandon Bobcats 3-1 on Friday night in the first match of a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars were led by outside hitters Meagan Onstad and Kaitlyn Hughes, who both tied for the match high with 15 kills.

The first set featured several wild momentum swings. It started out all Regina, as the hometown Cougars reeled off eight straight points to open the match. Brandon responded by winning 11 of the next 13 points to take the lead, but the Cougars took the set after finishing off on a 15-3 run.

The Cougars jumped out to a 16-10 lead at the second media timeout of the second set and went on to a 25-19 victory, giving them a 2-0 lead over the Bobcats. Brandon replied with a 25-23 victory in a tight third set that featured nine tie scores, but the Cougars jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the fourth and clinched the match with a 25-21 win.

Regina dug up 80 balls in the win, led by a career-high 20 from Hughes to give her one of the team's three double-doubles. Tiffany Herman (39 assists, 17 digs) and Onstad (15 kills, 16 digs) had the others.

Brandon's Teagan Hunter had a team-high 12 kills, while Sara Grona had 16 digs. Becky Young had 38 assists and 15 digs to register a double-double.

The Cougars hit .163 as a team during the win and .312 during the second set alone, while Brandon had a .095 hitting percentage.

The teams will square off in the second match of the series on Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. at the CKHS. If necessary, the third and deciding match will be played on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

NOTES: Hughes' 15 kills was also a career high.
