Box Score Game Summary
Eric Hunter's unassisted goal 30 seconds into overtime gave the University of Alberta Golden Bears a 5-4 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in Canada West men's hockey action at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
Hunter's goal came on an innocent-looking shot from the blue line that screened Regina goalie
Brant Hilton. Hilton was unable to get a clear view of the shot, and Hunter's wrister beat him to the glove side.
The win improves No. 2 Alberta's record to 23-4-1, while the Cougars fall to 9-15-2 with the loss.
Alberta's Derek Ryan scored twice in the first period to give the Bears a 2-0 lead after one. Ian McDonald scored an unassisted goal early in the second, extending Alberta's lead to three.
Just when it looked like the rout might be on, the Cougars got the offence rolling.
Dylan Chapman scored less than a minute after McDonald's goal to get Regina on the board, and the Cougars got goals from
Craig Cuthbert and
Devon LeBlanc in the last three minutes of the period to tie the game. LeBlanc's goal came with just one second remaining on the clock.
Mark Nelson scored midway through the third period to give the Cougars a 4-3 lead, but Dale Mahovsky's goal with less than two minutes remaining knotted the game at four.
Real Cyr made 26 saves in the win for Alberta, while Hilton stopped 32 shots for the Cougars.
Both teams were 1-for-7 on the power play.
The Cougars will finish off their 2009-10 season next weekend with a pair of games against Manitoba. Alberta will have a weekend off before hosting a best-of-three Canada West semifinal series beginning on March 5.
