Cougars fall to UBC in Canada West semi

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team lost 3-1 on Friday night to the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds in a Canada West semifinal match at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

UBC won the first set 25-16, but the Cougars fought back to tie up the match with a 25-15 win in the second. The Thunderbirds then reeled off 25-19 and 25-13 victories in the third and fourth sets to clinch the match.

Katie Tyzuk had 55 assists for UBC and added 12 digs, while Kyla Richey (16), Liz Cordonier (15), Shanice Marcelle (12), and Jen Hinze (10) all had at least ten kills for the Thunderbirds.

Meagan Onstad had 13 kills for the Cougars, while Beth Clark had 11 and a .476 hitting percentage and Rebecca Rink piled up a match-high 24 digs.

The win gives the Thunderbirds a berth in Saturday night's conference championship match against Manitoba and qualifies UBC for next weekend's CIS Championship in Edmonton.

The Cougars will meet Trinity Western on Saturday night in the Canada West third-place match, with the winner moving on to the national tournament. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
