Cougars sweep Saint Mary's; will play for fifth place on Sunday

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team scored a straight-sets win over Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon in the consolation semifinals of the 2010 CIS Championship.

The Cougars were dominant on Saturday, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-15 and clinching the match with an impressive 25-9 win in a third set that saw the team hit for a .600 percentage.

"That was the best possible response we could have had to our match yesterday," Cougars head coach Melanie Sanford. "It was very important for our team to play well today. We want to maximize our experience here at the nationals."

Beth Clark was close to unstoppable for Regina, recording 17 kills and just two errors while hitting .600 for the match. Clark was also strong at the net, ending up with six total blocks. Meagan Onstad had 14 kills and a .440 hitting percentage for the Cougars, while Tiffany Herman had 39 assists and Rebecca Rink tallied a match-high 10 digs.

Kerri Smit had seven kills for Saint Mary's, while Alison Beaver had a team-high eight digs.

The Cougars will face the winner of this afternoon's Montreal/Toronto consolation semifinal in the fifth-place match on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
