The University of Regina's women's volleyball team scored a three-set victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars came out strong, scoring a 25-16 win in a first set that saw them hit .400 as a team, then opened up a two-set lead after a 25-18 victory in the second.
Regina led 8-3 at the first media timeout of the third set, but the Wesmen came roaring back. With Mackenzie Jeffrey serving, Winnipeg reeled off nine consecutive points to turn a five-point deficit into a 13-9 advantage. The Wesmen took a 16-15 lead into the second media timeout and scored two quick points after that, but a timeout called by Regina head coach
Melanie Sanford changed the momentum of the set. The Cougars went on a 10-3 run, giving them a 25-21 win in the third set and their fourth conference victory of the season.
Meagan Onstad led the Cougars (4-7) with 13 kills and added eight digs, while
Tiffany Herman had 30 assists and
Rebecca Rink tied for the match lead with 10 digs.
Kaitlyn Hughes helped out with 10 kills as the Cougars hit .217 as a team during the win.
Sonia Rossy, Mackenzie Jeffrey, and Carleen Kruschel all had six kills for Winnipeg (3-8). Brittany Habing had the match's lone double-double, registering 22 assists and tying Rink for the match lead with 10 digs.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS following the conclusion of the men's match.
