Fresh off a weekend sweep over the Winnipeg Wesmen, the University of Regina's women's volleyball team is back at home this weekend with Friday and Saturday matches against the Brandon Bobcats at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The two wins for the Cougars (5-7) over the Wesmen last weekend put the U of R back into the CIS Top Ten and in sole possession of the seventh and final Canada West postseason berth. The Cougars won 3-0 on Friday night and scored a 3-1 win on Saturday after a dramatic come-from-behind win in the fourth set that saw them erase a late seven-point deficit.
Tiffany Herman recorded 75 assists for the Cougars last weekend and now ranks fourth in Canada West with an average of 9.67 assists per set.
Meagan Onstad is fifth in Canada West with 2.98 kills per set, while rookie middle
Michelle Sweeting's .279 hitting percentage also ranks fifth in the conference.
Ranked No. 7 in this week's national poll, Brandon comes into the weekend tied for fourth place in the Canada West standings with a 7-5 record. The Bobcats started the second half of the conference schedule with a pair of home sweeps over Thompson Rivers, but are coming off of two 3-0 road losses to No. 2-ranked UBC.
Brandon's Donata Huebert is having a fine first season for the Bobcats, as the rookie libero from Minden, Germany is currently fourth in Canada West with an average of 3.41 digs per set. Brandon's lineup features three fifth-year starters, including right side Sara Grona, left side Teagan Hunter, and setter Becky Young.
The Cougars and the Bobcats met once during the non-conference schedule, with Regina taking a 3-1 win at the Lea Marc Invitational in Winnipeg back in early October. The Cougars hold a 7-5 all-time advantage in conference matches between the two teams.
Following this weekend, the Cougars will finish off the Canada West schedule with a pair of road matches at UBC and two home matches against Saskatchewan. The conference quarterfinals are scheduled to begin on Feb. 18.
Brandon and Regina will square off at 6:15 on Friday night and at 8 p.m. on Saturday night following the conclusion of the men's match. Live statistics and video webcasts will be available for all four matches this weekend.
