The University of Regina's women's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit for the second consecutive night to record a 74-66 win over Fraser Valley on Saturday night in Abbotsford, B.C.
The Cascades started out strong and led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but the Cougars woke up in a big way in the third quarter. 12 consecutive points by the U of R tied up the game for the first time since midway through the first, and a pair of
Danielle Schmidt free throws at the end of the third gave the Cougars a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Joanna Zalesiak led all players in points (21), assists (8), and steals (4) for the Cougars, while
Lindsay Ledingham had 19 points and 11 rebounds to register a double-double.
Sarah Wierks had 15 points and 16 rebounds for Fraser Valley (8-10).
The Cougars improve to an impressive 15-3 with the two wins this weekend. They're in sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings and will have a big pair of home games against UBC (13-5) next weekend at the CKHS.
