Bobcats earn weekend split after three-set win over Cougars

The No. 7-ranked Brandon Bobcats recovered from a four-set loss on Friday to record a three-set win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Brandon stormed out to an early lead with a convincing 25-15 victory in the first set, then won 25-20 in the second and held off the Cougars to clinch the match with a 25-23 victory in the third set.

Teagan Hunter led Brandon with 11 kills and added 11 digs to register the Bobcats' lone double-double. Becky Young had 34 assists for Brandon, while Donata Huebert led the Bobcats defensively with a match-high 14 digs. Meaghan Robertson had seven kills and zero errors on 13 attacks to lead all players with a .538 hitting percentage. Jaryn Ruether was a perfect 16-for-16 on serve receive.

Kaitlyn Hughes had 10 kills and 12 digs for the Cougars, while Tiffany Herman had 32 assists and added a team-high 13 digs. Meagan Onstad, Michelle Sweeting, and Roxanne Olynyk each chipped in with nine kills.

The win improves Brandon's record to 8-6 as the Bobcats remain tied with Calgary for sixth place in the Canada West standings, while the Cougars drop to 6-8 on the year.

Brandon will have its hands full with No. 1-ranked Trinity Western (12-2) next weekend at home, while the Cougars will have a tough pair of away matches at No. 2 UBC (11-3).
