The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered a straight-sets loss to the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night in both teams' Canada West opener on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
UBC (1-0) won the first set by a 25-18 score, then recorded 25-20 and 25-17 wins in the second and third sets to clinch the match.
UBC's Kyla Richey led all players with 10 kills, while Lisa Barclay had nine kills and a match-high .421 hitting percentage. Brina Derksen-Bergen had 32 assists, eight blocks, and six digs, while Shanice Marcelle had eight kills and eight digs.

Rebecca Rink had a match-high 11 digs for the Cougars.
Tiffany Herman dished out 25 assists and fell just short of the double-double with nine digs.
The Thunderbirds enjoyed a huge advantage at the net, registering a total of 13 blocks compared to Regina's three.
The two teams will meet again at the CKHS on Saturday night. Match time is scheduled for 8 p.m. following the conclusion of the men's match.
