The University of Regina's men's basketball team was edged 78-76 by UBC Okanagan on Friday night in a Canada West game in Kelowna, B.C.

Regina had led since erasing an 11-point second-quarter deficit with an 18-1 run, but a six-point Cougar lead with three minutes to go in the fourth evaporated after the Heat scored 11 of the game's next 13 points.

UBC Okanagan's Bret Macdonald hit a big three-pointer to give UBC Okanagan the lead for the first time in the second half with two minutes to go, then another Macdonald jumper put the Heat back into the lead for good after a pair of Connor Burns free throws had given Regina a one-point advantage in the final minute.

Macdonald added a pair of late free throws to extend the Heat's lead to three. The Cougars had one final chance to inbound the ball for a shot to tie or win, but weren't able to get a shot off.

Yassine Ghomari and Simon Pelland both had 16 points to lead UBC Okanagan, while Macdonald ended up with 10.

Burns and Paul Gareau both ended up with 18 points, while Brendan Hebert, Addison Docherty, and Jared Janotta all added nine. Burns also had a game-high 10 rebounds to notch the game's lone double-double.

The Cougars (2-4) will be back in action on Saturday night in Kamloops, B.C. against Thompson Rivers (3-4).

NOTES: UBC Okanagan's win was the Heat's first Canada West victory.
