The University of Regina's women's volleyball team continues the Canada West schedule this weekend with a home-and-home against Saskatchewan. The Cougars and Huskies will meet for a rare Thursday night match at the CKHS before finishing off the weekend set on Saturday in Saskatoon.
The Cougars started off the conference schedule last Friday and Saturday against No. 1-ranked UBC, falling in straight sets in both matches.
Solveig Nilson hit a team-high .318 for the weekend, while
Rebecca Rink ended up with double-digit digs in both matches.
Meagan Onstad had her 500th career kill on Friday, becoming the sixth U of R player to hit the milestone since the rally point was introduced in 1999. Fifth-year setter
Tiffany Herman became the eighth Cougar to record her 500th career dig on Friday, a group that will soon be joined by Rink (492).
With second-year middle
Michelle Sweeting remaining out due to a lower-body injury, the Cougars gave rookie
Trisha Dobson her first Canada West starts on the weekend.
Abby Hodgins and
Ceanna Lindquist also made their debuts for the Cougars in Saturday's match against UBC.
Nilson, Dobson, Onstad, Herman,
Kaitlyn Hughes, and
Roxanne Olynyk will likely make up Regina's starting six on Thursday night with Rink at libero.
Saskatchewan also enters tonight's match with an 0-2 conference record after losing 3-0 and 3-1 at home to Trinity Western, which was ranked No. 10 in the first Top Ten of the year but jumped to No. 6 this week. Third-year outside hitter Candace Hueser led the Huskies with 20 kills over the two matches.
Both matches this weekend will be available at www.canadawest.tv.
NOTES: The all-time series is a dead heat, as Regina has a 17-17 record against Saskatchewan in the 34 conference matches played dating back to their first meeting in the 1995-96 season ... the Cougars have had a big edge over the Huskies in the last few years, winning nine consecutive matches over Saskatchewan and 14 of the last 15.
