The University of Regina's women's volleyball team recorded a four-set victory over provincial rival Saskatchewan on Thursday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars came out with 25-18 and 25-21 wins in the first and second sets before Saskatchewan replied with a 25-18 win in the third. Regina went on an 8-2 run midway through the fourth to take control of the set and held off Saskatchewan down the stretch to clinch their first conference win of the season.
Fifth-year setter
Tiffany Herman was masterful at the helm of the Cougar offence, ending up with 53 assists as the team hit for a .259 percentage in the victory. Three Cougars hit double-digit kills, led by
Meagan Onstad's 16.
Roxanne Olynyk had 15 kills and nine digs, while
Solveig Nilson had 13 kills and led all players with a .545 hitting percentage.
Onstad added 10 digs for a double-double, while rookie middle
Trisha Dobson chipped in with seven kills and a season-high six blocks.
Erin Foster had a double-double for Saskatchewan, dishing out 25 assists and tying Onstad for the match lead with 10 digs. Erin McGladdery had a team-high nine kills for the Huskies, while Laura Beadle had a solo block and six block assists to lead all players at the net.
Regina improves to 1-2 with the win, while Saskatchewan (0-3) is still searching for its first Canada West victory of the season.
The two teams will complete the home-and-home on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
NOTES: Cougar libero
Rebecca Rink needs just two more digs to hit the 500 mark for her career ... Herman's 53 assists are tied for the second most by a Cougar in a four-set match since Canada West began tracking the statistic in 2002.
