The University of Regina's women's volleyball team punched its ticket to the Canada West postseason with a 3-0 win over Saskatchewan on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars opened with a 25-22 win in the first set. Saskatchewan led by as many as five points early in the second set, but a 12-4 run swung the momentum in Regina's favour as the home side took a commanding two-set lead with a 25-20 victory. The Cougars jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set and clinched the match with a 25-18 win.
“We had a definite game plan tonight and the team did an excellent job of executing,” Cougars head coach
Melanie Sanford said. “We had a real good night attacking, and
Kaitlyn Hughes passed well all night long.”
Meagan Onstad blasted a match-leading 12 kills and tied Hughes for the team lead with nine digs.
Tiffany Herman had 38 assists and eight digs and finishes the season with a Canada West-leading 10.19 assists per set, while
Roxanne Olynyk had 10 kills and
Michelle Sweeting chipped in with nine.
Candace Hueser had a team-high eight kills for Saskatchewan, while Katie Graves led all players with 11 digs. Kira Zeeben had a match-high six total blocks for the Huskies (2-16).
The Cougars will now prepare for a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series against Trinity Western that will begin on Thursday in Langley, B.C.
NOTES: Herman becomes the first U of R player to average at least 10 assists per set over a single season … Regina and Trinity Western will be meeting in the Canada West quarterfinals for the third time in the past six seasons.
