Box Score Trinity Western took the first match of a best-of-three Canada West women's volleyball quarterfinal series with a 3-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Thursday night in Langley, B.C.
The Spartans set the tone by starting out the match with a 9-0 run and took a 25-16 win in the first set. The Cougars led 15-14 at one point in the second set, but a late 11-1 run by Trinity Western gave the Spartans a 25-16 win and a two-set lead in the match.
The Cougars led late in the third set after consecutive points gave them a 22-21 lead, but the Spartans came up with four points - including back-to-back kills by Amy Leschied - to clinch the match with a 25-22 win.
Kara Jansen Van Doorn had a match-high 13 kills for Trinity Western, while Leschied and Chelsea Wand both ended up with nine. Lauren O'Reilly had 31 assists for the Spartans and added 10 digs to register the match's lone double-double. Defensively, Andrea Ball had 11 digs and Nicole Bazin had a match-leading seven blocks.
Roxanne Olynyk's eight kills led the Cougars, while
Tiffany Herman had 26 assists and
Meagan Onstad tied Ball for the match high with 11 digs.
Regina and Trinity Western will meet in the second match of the conference quarterfinal series on Friday night at 6:15 p.m. PST. Should the Cougars win on Friday to push the series to a third match, it'll be held on Saturday at 5 p.m. PST.
