Box Score Game Summary
Two third-period goals brought the University of Regina's men's hockey team to within one of Alberta, but the Golden Bears were able to hold on for a 5-3 win on Friday night at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
The Cougars trailed by three going into the third, but
Dillon Johnstone's second goal of the game and
Cody Zubko's first as a Cougar cut the Alberta lead to 4-3. Regina peppered Alberta goalie Kurtis Mucha with 20 shots in the third period alone, but weren't able to come up with the tying goal. The Golden Bears scored an empty netter with one second remaining to secure the win.
The two teams traded goals in the first period, with Derek Ryan scoring for Alberta and Johnstone for Regina (7-14-2). Sean Ringrose, Johnny Lazo, and Ryan all scored for the Golden Bears to give them a 4-1 advantage through 40 minutes
Mucha ended up with 35 saves for Alberta, which improves to 14-5-2 with the victory. Regina goalie
Adam Ward was stellar in the loss, stopping 43 of Alberta' 47 shots.
The Golden Bears were 2-for-5 on the power play, while Regina was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Edmonton.
NOTES: Johnstone now has four goals in his last three games and has a team-leading nine on the season.
