Cougars outlast UBC Okanagan for five-set win

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team outlasted UBC Okanagan for a five-set road victory on Friday night in a Canada West match in Kelowna, B.C.

The Cougars dropped the first set by a 25-21 score, but recovered for a 25-18 win in the second. UBC Okanagan took another lead in the match after a convincing 25-15 victory in the third set, but the Cougars replied with a 25-22 win in the fourth and then led from start to finish in a 15-11 fifth-set win.

Regina dominated at the net, as Tiffany Herman and Michelle Sweeting both ended up with 11 total blocks in the victory and Solveig Nilson added eight assisted blocks. Sweeting was also the Cougars' top hitter, breaking out for 13 kills and leading all players with a .296 hitting percentage.

Rebecca Rink had a match-high 22 digs for the Cougars, while Herman dished out 42 assists.

Alex Basso led UBC Okanagan with 16 kills, with Kendra Wayling and Lenai Schmidt each getting credit for 15 digs. Chandler Proch had 47 assists for the Heat.

Regina and UBC Okanagan are now tied for ninth place in the Canada West standings with identical 3-12 records. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Kelowna in a match that will be webcast live at www.canadawest.tv.

NOTES: Friday's meeting was the first ever Canada West match between Regina and UBC Okanagan ... prior to Herman and Sweeting registering 11 blocks on Friday night, no Cougar had ever recorded more than 10 in a single match since 2002.
