The University of Regina's women's hockey team opens up its Canada West home schedule this weekend, as the Cougars host Lethbridge on Friday and Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on both nights.
The Cougars come into the weekend with a 1-1-0 record after starting conference play last weekend with a road split at UBC. After suffering a 4-0 loss to the Thunderbirds on Friday, the U of R recovered with a 3-2 shootout win on Saturday to come away with two points.
Rianne Wight and
Toni Ross were the stories for the Cougars in Saturday's win. Wight scored on all three of her shootout attempts, including back-to-back efforts in the fifth and sixth rounds, and Ross made 34 saves in regulation and stopped four of UBC's six shootout attempts to help seal the victory for the U of R.
Katelyn Kennedy and
Hillary Lerat both scored for the Cougars in regulation on Saturday, while rookie forward
Jill Kennedy notched an assist to record her first CIS point. Ross and
Jennifer Schmidt split the netminding duties over the weekend, with Schmidt getting the call on Friday before Ross tallied the win on Saturday.
Lethbridge also opened the 2012-13 conference schedule last weekend, suffering a pair of losses to No. 1-ranked Calgary. The Dinos won 4-1 over the U of L last Friday in Calgary before defeating the Pronghorns by a 5-2 margin in Lethbridge the following night.
The Pronghorns' top returning skater this season is second-year forward Sadie Lenstra, who scored 10 goals last season and was named the Canada West Rookie of the Year. Goalie Crystal Patterson was a Canada West first-team all-star last season, but Lethbridge went with Shauntelle Parsons last Friday in their season opener.
Lethbridge is guided by fifth-year bench boss Chandy Kaip, who was the Canada West Coach of the Year in 2011-12.
After this weekend, the Cougars are back on the road with a pair of games against No. 1-ranked Calgary.
