Troy Hunter

Cougars, Calgary to meet this weekend

Two of the four teams tied for first place in the Canada West men's hockey standings meet at The Co-operators Centre this weekend, as the University of Regina hosts No. 8-ranked Calgary on Friday and Saturday.

Both games have a 7 p.m. start time.

The Cougars are coming off a road sweep at Lethbridge, scoring the first four goals of the game in a 4-3 win last Friday and completing the two-win weekend with a 5-2 victory on Saturday night. Tyler Henry was the offensive catalyst for the U of R in the sweep, assisting on Matt Strueby's game-winning goal on Friday and putting up a three-point night on Saturday.

But the story of the season for the Cougars might be the development of second-year forward Troy Hunter (pictured). Hunter had just one assist in 22 games as a rookie last season, but has excelled this year on the team's first line with Henry and Strueby and is tied for second in the Canada West scoring race with eight points in the team's first four games. The Henry/Hunter/Strueby line has connected for 10 of the team's 17 goals so far this season.

On the blue line, Mark Schneider and 19-year-old rookie Ryan Dech both have a pair of assists, while John Sonntag has the only goal by a U of R defenceman this season. After missing the opening series against UBC due to an injury suffered during the non-conference schedule, fifth-year captain Russ Nielsen returned last week against Lethbridge.

Second-year goalies Lucas Gore and Andrew Hayes continue to split the netminding duties for the U of R. Hayes is 2-0 with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage, while Gore is 1-1 with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

No. 8-ranked Calgary also enters the weekend series with a 3-1-0 record, having started the season with a sweep over Lethbridge and recording a home split last weekend against UBC. Tyler Fiddler comes in as Canada West's leader in goals (6) and points (10), while linemate Brock Nixon also ranks among the conference leaders with eight points.

Calgary's Cory Pritz leads all Canada West blueliners in scoring, having recorded two goals and five assists for seven points through the Dinos' first four games of the campaign.

Dustin Butler has started three of Calgary's four games between the pipes and has a 2-1 record to go along with an impressive 2.28 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. Backup Jacob DeSerres got the start in a 7-4 win over UBC last Friday.

The two teams will also meet in Calgary for a two-game Canada West series in early January.
