The University of Regina's women's volleyball team started out the 2012-13 Canada West schedule with a five-set victory over Brandon on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Brandon started out with a 25-17 win in the first set, but the Cougars replied with 25-19 and 25-23 victories in the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Bobcats sent the match into a fifth and deciding set with another 25-17 win in the fourth, but the Cougars broke a 13-13 tie in the final set with a block by
Desiree Ates and
Trisha Dobson on a Meaghan Robertson attack and a kill by Ates clinched the match for the U of R.
Ates was the story of the match for the U of R. Making her debut for the Cougars after transferring to the U of R following a brief stint at the University of New Hampshire, Ates led all players with 23 kills and 12 digs in the victory.
Meagan Lane dished out 59 assists, while
Michelle Sweeting tied her career high with 15 kills and
Tori Glynn chipped in with 11.
Chloe Reimer led Brandon with 10 kills, while Shanlee McLennan had nine and Victoria Dakin collected eight. Larissa Vonkeman and Dakin tied for the match high with four total blocks, while McLennan led Brandon with nine kills.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the men's match.
