Meagan Cormier (pictured) scored two first-half goals for the University of Regina's women's soccer team as the Cougars took a 2-1 win over Fraser Valley on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.
Donna Pinning replied with a penalty kick goal early in the second half for Fraser Valley, but the Cascades were held off the board for the rest of the contest. The Cougars (5-2-0) pull into a tie for fifth place with Alberta in the Canada West standings, while Fraser Valley drops to 5-2-1 on the season.
Both of Cormier's goals came off Fraser Valley turnovers. The first came just five minutes in to give the Cougars an early lead, and the second was at the 27-minute mark after Cormier was left with a wide open net after an intercepted pass.
That gave the Cougars all the offence they needed. Pinning's goal came after
Kelsey Abstreiter was yellow carded for a foul inside the box, but U of R goalkeeper
Stephanie Possberg led a solid defensive effort to secure the team's fifth conference win of the season.
Fraser Valley held a 10-8 shot advantage and a 6-4 edge in shot attempts. Possberg made five saves between the pipes for the U of R to notch her fourth win of the season, while Chantelle Biagioni and Kayla Kim split the netminding duties for Fraser Valley.
The Cougars are back in action on Sunday against No. 5-ranked Victoria, which suffered its first conference loss on Saturday afternoon against Saskatchewan. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the U of R Field.
Fraser Valley will play at Saskatchewan (4-3-0) on Sunday.
NOTES: The Cougars tied a school single-season record with their fifth Canada West victory of the year ... Cormier now has seven goals on the season, which trails only Jessica Waller's 10 (2002) in the U of R's single-season record book.
