Box Score

The University of Winnipeg's women's volleyball team won in four sets over the Regina Cougars for the second time in as many nights on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Winnipeg took the first two sets by 25-22 and 25-14 to put a stranglehold on the match, but the Cougars held the Wesmen to a negative hitting percentage in the third set and roared back with a 25-18 win to force a fourth.

It looked like Winnipeg was going to cruise to a fairly easy win in the fourth set after leading most of the way and eventually going up 24-20, but the Cougars rallied. With Michelle Sweeting serving, the Cougars reeled off four straight points – three of which were off blocks with Trisha Dobson in the middle of it all – to even the set at 24-24. The Cougars were able to survive five match points, but were unable to survive the sixth as the Wesmen got back-to-back kills from Sarah Lynch and Carleen Kruschel to clinch the match with a 29-27 win.

Ozana Nikolic led Winnipeg (2-5) with 15 kills, while Lynch ended up with nine and Kruschel had eight. Hope Schneider dished out 28 assists, while Alicia Perry led the Wesmen at the net with five blocks.

Desiree Ates, Michelle Sweeting, and Chelsea Ziolkowski all had 12 kills for the Cougars, while Meagan Lane had 36 assists and Megan Semeniuk led all players with 12 digs and had 37 serve receives without an error.

Winnipeg returns home for a two-match set against Trinity Western next Friday and Saturday, while the Cougars hit the road next weekend for a pair of matches against UBC in Vancouver.
